Domain Names

Your site will require a unique domain name. Some of the services that develop sites provide a domain name. Try not to get one with a free service attached to it.
Unique and short, but one that makes it clear what your site is all about is best.
For more info see Wikipedia below. There are many companies that can get you a domain name. They are fairly similar. GoDaddy is a popular one. You must register it every year.

GoDaddy.com

What's a Domain Name?
Want a Web site? Personalized email? How about an easy, affordable way to promote your business, class reunion or favorite hobby? A unique, memorable dot com domain name is the first step to doing all this and more. It's your 'address' on the World Wide Web, and along with your Web site, serves as your 'online identity,' reflecting your purpose and personality. Friends, family, customers - anyone in the world with Internet access - can type your domain name into their Web browser and visit your Web site.

WIX
We will Start with Wix.  It has no surprises and is fairly easy with fantastic capabilities for a novice. You may need to finish on your on computer to have easy access to your own information/images. I have started a site called Contig-Variations. It is not complete.  Also just a fun site. Sorry the slide show only held a few phtos.

Weebly
Another free site that is powerful and one you might like.

Yola
Yola and Weebly are quite similar. There is a lot of discussion about which people like best.
YOLA Tutorials

Web.com costs $11.99 and is an easy setup with very complete support. Sort of a classic site of its kind.

Homestead by Intuit is only $4.99/month after 30-day free trial.I suggest this site for making an effective business/charity site easily. This is probably the fastest to set up if you find a template that suits your purposes.

Godaddy is a domain and/or website builder. Lowest $4.99/mo. Very Popular site that has lots of other features. Good site to build both business or personal site.

WordPress is a free blog builder. These can be very impressive blogs. They have pages that are really regular web pages.

Lunarpages Quicksite Web Hosting Plan
Another popular easy website builder.

DreamWeaver
I use DreamWeaver, the most popular program, to build my sites. It is costly, but very effective. They have a free trial offer.

Kompozer
A free program that is similar to DreamWeaver. If you plan to make and manage a number of sites this is the free program you will want. Must be downloaded

Joomla  is a free website developer and content management progam. It is especiall good if you need to change content frequently or put in a larrge number of "products"

CoffeeCup is free to schools and there is a free trial. Excellent for a quick store on the net. Program must be downloaded to your computer.

Mobile Phone Store Put your whole store on your mobile phone quickly and easily.

Google for Webmasters

If you are realy serious about your site use these tools. They often come with the site-builders. Not useful if you just want a site that friends can pull up using your URL.

How to Create Your Best Website Layouts Ever |

How to create your best website layouts ever | News | TechRadar UK
This is for the serious designer who is willing to use a little HTML. The idea of using a sketchpad and creating a map of the site is useful for those developers who do not use a pre-made template. First, look at lots of websites to see what you like.

Photos/Images: Photo Programs,Online Photo Albums and Photo Editors

If you are going to use your own photos/graphics you will need some place to edit and store them. You have My Pictures on your computer. I suggest you keep a separate folder for each site labeled images. Also it is a good idea to put backup copies on the web or a CD. Images placed on the we are usually jpg.

You can edit pictures in Paint by right clicking on the picture and clicking on edit.

You also have Windows Photo Gallery on your computer. Very basic but makes it easy to tag, caption and burn to CD's'  Also Windows Media Center.

I really like Irfanview as an editor and viewer. It is free to download and is a most complete editor. You can scan and do batch editing and change your photos in a great number of ways. For Photoshop effects free download Gimp

InkScape is illustration software similar to the commercial packages Adobe Freehand and Adobe Illustrator, but without the cost.

Godaddy: Photo Hosting Made Easy
by Godaddy.com has a small cost. If you like Godaddy it is worth it.

Picasa is a free site that must be downloaded to your computer. It is very complete and gives you an online web album.

Snapfish is free online site that is quite complete. Not as good editing, but you can do all sorts of things with your photos.

Photobucket is another excellent free site that has a very interesting feature, Scrapbooks.

There are other good sites, and many of the free editor sites, like Godaddy, have image storing and editing capabilities included.

Twitter and Facebook as Instant News Service

Ping - How High Will Real-Time Search Fly? - NYTimes.com

" When a US Airways plane landed in the Hudson River in January, the first picture appeared on Twitter. In June, Twitter users were mourning Michael Jackson before major news outlets reported his death. And, this month, as much of the nation was riveted by images of a balloon believed to be carrying a 6-year-old boy, every twist and turn was tweeted and retweeted instantaneously, drowning out just about everything else on the site.

As major events unfold, Twitter, Facebook and other similar services are increasingly becoming the nation’s virtual water coolers. They spread information quickly, sometimes before the mass media do, and their ricocheting bursts of text and links become an instant record of Americans’ collective preoccupations."

A series of videos that help you become more expert in Facebook.

Advanced Twitter Tips - butterscotch

Advanced Twitter Tips - butterscotch
A series of instructional videos to help you make better use of Twitter.
Note that the site contains a large number of instructional videos that are very helpful.

Twitter

Twitter is a miniblog and getting to be one of the most popular SN sites. A good number of people do not tweet themselves very often, but rather they follow celebrities, news, information, etc.
Some college students use it for group  work and note taking or note sharing.
Some people just twitter inanely. High school students often gossip on it or some even share answers with it comfortably out of sight on their phones. Many companies and organizations use it for PR and advertising. Others just use it to keep up with what is current (most twetted topic). It has been useful to get news out of Iran and other places along with other SN sites.

As with other texting there is a whole new abbreviated vocabulary:
8:] a Gorilla
and smilies scuba forum

You will notice that many tweets contain links to other sites and are sort of bookmarks.

Twitter has many apps that expand it beyond just a miniblog. See the post below.

Facebook & Wave: Why Facebook Should Clone Google Wave

Face book is facing competition from a new super email site from Google called wave which is in Beta at the moment. This article explains why Wave and Facebook should be combined.
Basically all e correspondence will become social and multimedia. A selection about Facebook
is interesting to us as we start Facebook.

Facebook does a lot of things, and with over 300 million active users, they do a lot of things for a lot of people. But the two things they might do best are enable sharing, and co-opt good ideas from companies that target early adopters.
According to some data, Facebook is the most popular way to share information online, more popular than older technologies like email. Which probably shouldn’t come as a surprise given that Nielsen Online reported earlier this year that social networking now has a broader global reach than email, and that among social networks Facebook is experiencing the most most growth.
While Facebook certainly hasn’t killed email, something that has been has been a recurring meme since 2007 (see here, here, here and here, for example), people are spending more and more time on the site.

FaceBook

FaceBook is actually easier to use than Blogger. It is a lean site set up only for social networking and not designed after the diary. It is very easy to use because of this. If you want to pimp up your site, you will find it more difficult to do. You will notice that other sites are usually "plain Jane."

A note about a quirk in FaceBook is that to get to your wall (where public messages are displayed) you need to click on your name on the top right side of the page. After all the setup is done the wall will come up each time you enter FaceBook.  Also note that they are sending you email that you should read. (If you do not know how to get your email, try Mail2Web. You will need your address and password.)

You will begin to receive emails asking you to be a friend. My suggestion is to decline them, unless you know them. ( The teenager love to have hundreds of "friends")

If you belong to a group, be sure you friend them.

FaceBook Help is very complete so we will not spend so much time in class on building our page, Rather, we will network with each other since this is what FaceBook is all about.

For those who desire to fancy up their page, I can make suggestions or you can Google your questions. Information about FaceBook is plentiful.

Make the Title of Your Blog Look More Interesting!

You can put a picture into the title rectangle of your blog.

Go to customize, then the Page Elements page.   Click on the small Edit in the lower right hand corner of the Header box.   When the next screen comes up, you have the choice of selecting an image from the web or from your computer.   From your computer, you can just browse and click on the location of the image, but it appears that you have to type in the URL if you're using an image from the web.  I couldn't get a copy and paste to work....   The image should show up on the page.

Be sure to click on the instruction to put the picture behind the title, so  you can still read the title, and also click on Shrink to Fit, so the picture squeezes into the space of the header.

Voila!  You have a personalized header!

Photo Buffs Try Splashr and Photoshow

Splashr takes the photos you have on Flikr and makes a great presentation.

You may like Photoshow better. Why not check them both out?

I will have more on this later, if anyone requests it. You can follow the instructions yourself if you are a photo buff or are considering a commercial or a site for a cause.

This could be a class or group project by making a show about Senior College.

Some Thoughts

Have you looked at the suggested list of SN sites for ones that serve your purposes?

Have you tried Yahoo groups(e.g. Portland groups), Grandparents groups, or Craigslist forums to find people with similar interests?

Do you think the class should undertake a class project?

I would like to do a video of the class doing a skit or something. Any ideas?

If you have suggestions for the class please lets hear them. Our purposes are to become familiar with social networking and create our personal space on the web.

Checking Backlinks

Wanto know who linked to your blog? Use Back Links: Back links help

Monetize or Add Ads

Personally, I do not like these. If you only have a few people viewing you blog it is not worth it. If your blog gets hundreds of viwers you might want to consider it. Monetize is one of the tabs and more info is in MONETIZE.

Using Labels

You can indes you posts by topic using LABELS. For instance, if you want to find all of your
posts about Maine you will be able to if you put Maine in the Label box of each post. For more information: LABELS.
